Event Round Up

The British Association of True Working Kelpies was delighted to welcome members and visitors to Northern Ireland for another successful sheepdog training clinic, held on Saturday 27th June 2026.

With 23 attendees, the clinic brought together handlers of all experience levels, from complete beginners starting young dogs through to experienced handlers looking to fine-tune established dogs. It was particularly encouraging to see both Australian Working Kelpies and Border Collies represented throughout the day, creating an excellent learning environment where everyone could benefit from different perspectives and working styles.

We were privileged to welcome Mike Jones and Gwyn Morris as our guest trainers. Throughout the day, they generously shared their knowledge, experience and practical advice, working with each handler to help develop both dogs and handlers in a relaxed, supportive environment.

The morning began with a group session where each handler had the opportunity to work their dog and discuss any challenges they were facing. During the afternoon, the group split into smaller sessions, allowing everyone to spend more individual time with the trainers and gain practical, hands-on advice tailored to their own dog.

One of the highlights of the day was seeing such a wide range of experience represented. Our youngest handler, Odhran, aged just nine years old, impressed everyone with the partnership he has already developed with his dog, Tex. It was fantastic to see young people becoming involved in stock dog training, and we look forward to watching his progress in the years ahead.

The clinic perfectly reflected what BATWK is all about—bringing together people who share a passion for good working dogs, encouraging learning at every level, and supporting the future of the Australian Working Kelpie throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Mike Jones and Gwyn Morris for travelling to Northern Ireland and sharing their time, experience and knowledge so generously throughout the day.

A huge thank you also goes to everyone who attended, whether as a handler or spectator. The willingness to learn, share experiences and support one another created a welcoming atmosphere that made the day enjoyable for everyone involved.

Finally, thank you to all of the BATWK members and volunteers who helped organise the event behind the scenes. From preparing the venue and livestock to catering, parking and refreshments, your hard work ensured the day ran smoothly from start to finish.

We hope everyone left with greater confidence, new ideas to work on at home and lasting friendships within the Working Kelpie community. We look forward to welcoming both familiar and new faces to future BATWK events as we continue to promote the Australian Working Kelpie and support handlers across the United Kingdom and Ireland.
